We’ve been interested in the potential uses of 3D printing for visualizing design ideas. Applications for Architects are wide ranging from models of whole buildings to mock-ups of small details. We recently had a 3D printing service make a sample piece of a crown molding made so that we could test its size and proportion within the space before the craftsman fabricates the entire quantity of molding in plaster. Costs for 3D printing are currently similar to, or in some cases less expensive than, having mock-ups custom made by hand, but they are dropping as 3D printing becomes more commonplace. We hope to be able to utilize it more often as an efficient way to test out ideas and design details. This mock-up was printed by 3D Factory.
