Quiet & Contemporary Townhouse

Living room with a white fireplace overlooking a double-height kitchen and large windows.

This project was the result of a creative collaboration between client, interior designer, architect, and builder. The result is an inviting, quiet, modern, and flowing home with a timeless design.

Before
Nearly two decades ago, we completed a full-gut renovation of this townhouse. When the house was sold in 2020, its new owners reached out to us again.

We translated the warm, industrial-inspired finishes, complete with metal accents, exposed brick, and bright cherry, and turned them into a softer, serene version of contemporary design.

After Curved modern staircase landing with white plaster solid railing.
Before A staircase with black metal center beam stringers, cherry handrails and risers, and black balusters sits in front of an exposed brick wall. A wood and black fabric loveseat sits under the staircase.
In our embodied carbon analysis, we realized the existing staircase, designed by us in the early 2000s, did not need replacing. A team of artisans carefully cased the staircase in plaster, completely changing the look and feel of the staircase in the space.
After View from the kitchen into the front of a townhouse, with a split level housing two separate living spaces.
Before Double height space with a large grey fireplace and living room on the upper floor. The spaces are divided by dark metal balisters with wood handrails.
We focused on perfecting, rather than overhauling, the home's layout. Keeping the split-level entertainment space maintained the connection between the kitchen and living rooms, while updated finishes brought a renewed sense of cohesion to the relationship between levels.

Note from the Architect

This Carroll Gardens townhouse was the result of a fun collaboration between the clients, Nune, and BIA. The resulting serene environment allows natural light to pour through spaces, which seamlessly blend together from floor to floor.
